TAKE ACTION
Most Americans do not want
Genetically Modified Organisms in their food. I realized the
GMO issue was
important to most of us when I did a story on a
Tea Party Rally.
Off-camera, I asked people for their thoughts on
GMO risks and health effects. Turns out many of the Tea Party
protesters are as angry about Genetically Modified Organisms in their
food as liberal food activists.
So, on the GMO issue, we're
all in this together.
I made a movie about
Genetically Engineered Food and the politics of GMO's. I don't expect
you'll be able to find the time or resources to match my commitment, in
lieu of dedicating a year of your life,
here's what you can do!
First, you should know that
the GMO
industry is very slick. They pay scientists, bloggers, pundits
and politicians
to advocate for the Utopian fantasy that GMOs will feed the
hungry--despite ample evidence to the contrary.
Especially considering the history of genetically
modified food.
Some Americans think that GMOs
increase productivity in crops. This is due to extremely effective marketing. But people's
natural, common sense tells them there may be
something to be concerned about. Be prepared to help them understand
the risks, economic impacts and health effects of GMO crops.
There is a tipping
point where grocery stores and restaurants will stop selling GMO
foods. It's easy to find. It's when they become non-profitable. So stop
buying GMO products.
Not
buying GMOs is the quickest way to end the GMO regimes.
Never refer to products that
are highly
processed as 'food.' You will be surprised by your friends' reactions
when you say
something like, 'non-nutritive, genetically
modified corn patty instead of burger.

Remember
these
talking
points:
1.
There is no GMO for increased yield or enhanced
nutrition;
2. There has never been a
long-term, multi-generational food safety study of even one glyphosate
or Bt
GMO;
3. The
same companies, regulators and scientific bodies that once told you DDT
and asbestos were safe are now telling you GMOs are
safe.
4. Independent safety and health risk
assessments of GMOs is forbidden by law.
Contact your legislator.
The
industry
line that GMOs are good for agriculture has pervaded our entire
government
to the point where both Democratic and Republican parties
wholeheartedly support the
GMO patent regimes.
When
contacting your legislator, try approaching him or her in an
informative manner and remember the talking
points!
Buy vegetables from a farmer's
market. Here is an excellent search engine set up by the marketing arm of the
USDA.
Buy organic products
when funds are available. Our family's approach to organics is
to purchase them when we can afford them but not be absolutists about
the issue.
Changing habits,
learning new ways of living and evaluating health risks can be a long
process. The
important thing is to keep at it, learn and develop better meals as you
go.
Begin by avoiding GMOs!
One of the
things that drives me crazy is the absolutism shown by some 'foodies'.
It seems expected that American eating habits should change
overnight and when that doesn't happen, well, it's a DISASTER!!!!
Well, I say, We're all in this together; forgive and inform.
