GMO SAFETY, HEALTH AND RISK QUESTIONS

GMO health and GMO risks are the starting point for most people, setting them on a path that leads to a greater understanding of the entire GMO debacle.

Genetic Chile, the only GMO movie that goes into great detail in the way GMOs are tested and approved, is a 'must see' documentary film about the GMO patent regimes and the risks to the health of humanity and the world that they pose.

Genetically Engineering the food supply, and then patenting the seeds for profit, has lead to greater poverty, unemployment, starvation and death thrughout the world. I'm not the only one saying that, The World Bank, the United Nations and the World Health Organization put out a report in 2008 (a four year study) that sums up the effect GMOs have had on agriculture: Less than five percent of farmers (mainly giant, multinational corporations) see positivie, short term economic effects from GMOs.

The other ninety-five percent of farmers are put at a detriment by GMO patent laws.

And that's before the increased use of pesticides caused by GMOs and other GMO health risks are evaluated. That's before evaluation can be done on the new crop of GMOs that have as many as eight engineered traits. That's before looking into the industry's return to diquat, paraquat and Atrazine in Genetically Modified seeds.

What we do know for certain is that GMO health, GMO risks and GMO safety cannot be definitively known. This is because independent testing for GMO food safety is forbidden by law.

You cannot test a seed (like Consumer Reports does cars and toasters) for GMO safety because Monsanto won't allow it. Monsanto does the GMO safety evaluation testing in secret, even the results of the studies are held back from the public.

That's right, you cannot test your own food to see if it's safe. We are all left to the good graces of Monsanto to test the food for GMO health risks.

Here is a stunning primer on the GMO health and safety issue written by a former lawyer for the USDA.

The author goes into detail about the rise of the concepts of 'substantial equivalence' and 'Generally Recognized As Safe' (GRAS or G.R.A.S.) that the government regulatory agencies use to avoid independent, long term, GMO safety studies of GMO products as regards health and risks.
